Low-Income Energy Assistance (LIHEAP)

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded program that provides eligible households with financial help to pay for energy costs.

What Can I Get Help With?

LIHEAP can help you pay your energy bills and may provide emergency services, such as:

  • Emergency lodging
  • Central air replacement and repairs
  • Window conditioners

If you qualify for LIHEAP, you may receive Energy Assistance and/or the Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP), while funds last. Using the links below, you can download an application or apply directly from Missouri LIHEAP website.

Who Can Participate?

  • Be a Missouri resident
  • Be a U.S. citizen or be legally admitted for permanent residence
  • Live in the household, be responsible for paying the utility bill, must be over 18 and included on the application
  • Have $3000 or less in bank accounts, investments or retirement accounts
  • Meet specific income guidelines – see income chart

Keeping Current

Keeping Current is a program that provides bill credits to eligible customers to help make energy bills more affordable. Learn more about requirements and how and where to apply.

What is Keeping Current?

  • Keeping Current is a payment assistance program that helps make paying your energy bill more affordable. It includes a monthly bill credit, along with help to reduce the total amount you owe.

Who Can participate?

  • The income guidelines are up to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level for the Keeping Current Program.
  • Keeping Current runs all year, and the latest program changes are effective September 2023. See the Monthly Household Income Requirements chart to see if you qualify.

Keeping Cool Program

What is Keeping Cool?

  • This program provides up to five bill credits of $50 from May through September. Eligible customers include senior citizens, those with children under 5, or who have a documented chronic medical condition or a disability.

  • The income guidelines are up to 200% of the Federal Poverty for the Keeping Cool Program.

    Dollar More

    The Dollar More Program is available to eligible households struggling to afford their energy bill.

    Get Help with Dollar More

    • If you’re struggling to afford your energy bill, the Ameren Missouri Dollar More program may be able to help. This program is funded by voluntary customer and company donations. Eligible households may receive up to $600 per calendar year in assistance and must be at or below 200% of the federal poverty level to qualify.

    Who Can participate?

    • The income guidelines are up to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. See the income eligibility chart for details.

    How Can You Help?  Make a Donation.

    • You can make a difference. By enrolling in Dollar More and adding just $1.00 per month to your energy bill, you will join others who have helped families in need with their energy costs. Dollar More assists families with their home energy costs through voluntary donations. Together with the United Way and a network of human service agencies, 100% of all donations go to help families in need within the Ameren Missouri service territory.
    • All donations are tax deductible.

    Weatherization Assistance

    Qualifying income-eligible homeowners and renters may be qualified for weatherization improvements to their homes.

    What is Weatherization?

    • The Weatherization Assistance Program provides eligible households with home energy conservation services. The program provides cost-effective, energy-efficient home improvements to Missouri residents who qualify – especially the elderly, children, those with physical disadvantages and others most affected by high utility costs.

    Who Can Participate?

    • To be eligible for this benefit program, you must be a Missouri resident and you must meet the income guidelines, up to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.
    • Preference may be given to:
      • People over 60 years of age
      • Families with one or more members with a disability
      • Families with children (in most states)
    • Under DOE guidelines, you are automatically eligible to receive weatherization assistance if you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF).

    New Start Energy Relief

    For neighbors who have experienced being unhoused and are seeking permanent housing, Ameren Missouri offers past due bill forgiveness. Learn more about requirements and how and where to apply.

    About the New Start Energy Relief Program

    • The New Start Energy Relief Program offers up to $1000 to reestablish service, and may be used for:
      • Past due bills
      • Late pay charges
      • Bill amounts associated with unauthorized use
    • No deposit is required, and after connecting with an agency, further assistance in applying for other assistance programs like LIHEAP and Weatherization can help manage future energy bills.

    Eligibility

    To qualify for this support you must meet all of the following criteria:

    • You are an Ameren Missouri customer with previous electric service
    • You have an outstanding bill, which may include late pay charges
    • You have been unhoused or spent time in a shelter in the past year

    Clean Slate Gas Program

    Ameren Missouri created the Clean Slate Program to help eligible gas customers clear their past-due balances and start fresh.

    About the Clean Slate Program

    • Ameren recognizes there are families struggling and in need of assistance who don’t qualify for many of the existing federal and state assistance programs. The Clean Slate program is available for gas customers who have past due accounts.

    Who Can Participate?

    To be eligible for Clean Slate, gas customers must meet the following requirements:

    • Have an active Ameren Missouri gas account that is past due, including those on payment agreements, or reconnecting an account
    • Pay 10% of the past-due balance
    • Experiencing financial hardship
    • Household income up to 300% of the federal poverty level

    Medical Equipment Registry

    Sometimes a medical emergency can present a challenge in paying your bill on time.

    Critical Medical Need Program

    In collaboration with the United Way and Spire, for Ameren customers with a serious medical condition where loss of utility service may aggravate the illness or prevent the use of life-support equipment. Certified medical providers must complete and submit the form. Call the United Way at 211 for more details.
